It can result in consuming more alcohol than intended which has negative impacts on our physical and mental health as well as our waistlines. Are you doing Sober October? Mocktail Recipes and Non-Alcoholic Options
Firstly what is the Sober October Challenge?
The Sober October Challenge, is to go alcohol-free for the month of October! It has been brought about to raise awareness of the negative impacts alcohol can have on our minds as well as our long-term physical health. It encourages everyone to get involved and do your best to stay alcohol free for the month, or even reduce your intake if you do not want to do the entire month.
O Kcal Pomegranate Water Recipe
- 1½ pomegranate
- 2cm piece of ginger
- 1 lime
- Ice cubes
- Hold the pomegranate cut side down in your fingers and bash the back of it with a spoon so the seeds tumble into a jug.
- Finely grate in some peeled ginger, then slice and add the lime.
- Add loads of ice, then top up with water.
Non-Alcoholic Vodka Appletini – 45Kcal
- 90ml cloudy apple juice
- 30ml freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 30ml non-alcoholic vodka (or 1 tsp apple cider vinegar)
- 1 tsp of sugar or sweetener (optional)
- Add all ingredients to a shaker with a few cubes of ice and shake until combined.
- Pour into a martini glass.
- Garnish with an apple fan or apple slice and serve.
If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, anything with a tight lid will work – I love using a mason jar or water bottle.
Other non alcoholic options:
Heineken 0.0 is a great option – the same great taste but alcohol free and only 69Kcal per bottle.
Becks alcohol-free beer is also fantastic and just 39Kcal per bottle!

What to do during Sober October
A lot of people out there wonder “what am I going to do for Sober October” as they do not think they can go out on the weekend without a few drinks. I think people should challenge this idea. Why not go out and stick to the non-alcoholic options on the market. There are so many available now with Heineken, Becks, Guinness and others having great options. You’ll normally have a couple of mocktails on a cocktail menu too!
If you don’t want to go out, you could do nights in with friends, a dinner party with alcohol-free wine for example. Check out a new movie in the cinema. There are plenty of options out there.
