What is a proper skincare routine | Benefits of a skincare routine
Self-care is all about taking care of yourself, both physically and mentally, and one of the easiest ways to do that is through a good skincare routine. Not only can it help to improve the health and appearance of your skin, but it can also reduce stress and improve your overall mood. We now know that a good mood and low stress also helps with our weight loss, so what more reason do you need to start a proper skincare routine!? If you find yourself wondering “What is a proper skincare routine” or you want to start a basic “at home” skincare routine, I have you covered!
When you take the time to care for your skin, you’re showing yourself that you’re worth the effort and that you deserve to look and feel your best. Plus, self-care is all about promoting self-love and self-acceptance, which can lead to improved confidence.
Where to start with skincare | How do I start my skincare routine
So, where do you start? First, it’s important to remember that self-care is not just about physical appearance but also about taking care of your mind and spirit. A skincare routine can be a great way to achieve both, as well as to set aside some time for yourself every day.
How to start a skincare routine – Skincare routine at home
Start slow – introduce one product at a time
If you’re new to skincare, start slow. Introduce one product at a time and incorporate new products with time in between or it may upset your skin and cause irritation. Keep it simple and get the basics right before you go mad using serums and oils etc.
What is a basic skincare routine? | What is a proper skincare routine
A basic skincare routine is cleansing, toning and moisturising. They go in that order too!
Cleansing is key – Skincare routine for oily skin
Cleansing is the most basic but most important thing to get right. It’s important to cleanse in the morning and double cleanse at night, especially as we get older and if we wear makeup during the day.
Why do we cleanse?
Cleansing is important to remove makeup, bacteria and pollution from our skin after a busy day. But it gets increasingly more important as we age. Skin naturally sheds every 27 days as our skin cells die off and new ones replace them. However, as we age, the skin finds it harder to shed these dead skin cells and for the new cells to renew. This can cause more dull-looking skin. Cleansing helps to clear away the dead skin cells to keep your skin looking brighter and fresh.
Another reason why cleansing is so beneficial is because as we age, we tend to buy products with ingredients to help with aging. However, if we have not cleansed properly, our skin will not absorb these beneficial ingredients.
How do you cleanse properly?
So, how do you cleanse correctly? First, start with a quick cleanse in the morning to wash away pillow bacteria, oils from your hair etc. Then, double cleanse each night, especially if you have oily skin or wear makeup. The first cleanse washes off the makeup, oil and residue, and then the second cleanse actually cleans the skin. Make sure all cleanser is removed before you move on to the next step of your skincare routine.
What order to I apply products
As I’ve mentioned, it goes in order of: cleanse, tone and moisturise. But, for a more thorough routine, remember to start with the lightest products after your cleanse and move to the heavier products. For example, cleanse, then a water-based serum, oil-based serum, face oil, and moisturiser. You don’t have to use all of these products in one day, but this is just the general order depending what you use.
Also, you don’t have to do each step of your skincare routine every day. Like making your dinner, you make a different meal depending on your mood. The same can be said for your skincare routine. One day, you might decide to add a serum after your cleanser, and the next day, you might opt for a face oil instead.
Do I need a serum?
Serums and moisturisers are important with age too to preserve and prevent aging.
Serums have been very popular the last few years. The idea is that they absorb quickly and deeply in the skin to work on a deeper level. A great ingredient to look out for is hyaluronic acid which is great to hydrate the skin (keep an eye out for this in products you may be looking at buying).
When it comes to facial oil, less is more.
When using a face oil, they normally come with a pipette. You only use 4 drops max. Do not use the full pipette which is what most people use. By doing it the correct way your skin will look its best and the product will last 5x times longer.”
Don’t get overwhelmed by skincare
Don’t get weighed down by a complicated routine. Have a few products you like and make sure you do your basic skincare routine, adding in one or two products (exfoliator, serum or face oil) every few nights. Remember that with any new product, you will not see results straight away. It takes a week or two to start seeing results and consistency is key!
What skincare do I recommend in Ireland?
I have had Niamh from Holos Skincare talk at my WeightMatters meetings recently as it is a brand I use and love. The products I use are absolutely fantastic.
How is self care good for weight loss | Does Self Care Help with Weight Loss?
Self-care is important for weight loss because it helps individuals to develop a healthy relationship with themselves, their body, and their food choices. Here are some ways in which self-care can support weight loss:
- Reduces stress: High levels of stress can lead to weight gain, as stress results in the release of the hormone cortisol, which can increase appetite and cravings for high-fat and high-sugar foods. Engaging in self-care practices such as meditation, walking, yoga, or taking a relaxing bath can help reduce stress levels.
- Improves sleep: Lack of sleep has been linked to weight gain, as it can effect the hormones that regulate hunger and fullness. Engaging in self-care practices such as establishing a regular sleep routine, avoiding phones before bedtime, and creating a comfortable sleep environment can improve the quality and quantity of sleep.
- Encourages mindful eating: Self-care practices such as taking time to plan and prepare nutritious meals, eating mindfully, and paying attention to hunger and satiety signals can help individuals make healthier food choices, reduce overeating, and maintain a healthy weight.
- Promotes physical activity: Self-care involves taking care of the body, which includes engaging in physical activity that feels enjoyable and sustainable. Finding activities that one enjoys, such as dancing, walking, hiking, or playing a sport, can help individuals incorporate more movement into their daily routine, leading to improved health and weight loss.
Overall, self-care is an important aspect of weight loss because it helps us to to develop a positive relationship with ourselves, our body, and our food choices, which can lead to sustained healthy habits and long-term weight management.
